BBSO has an immediate opening for an Engineer to manage all aspects of the New
Solar Telescope (NST). The NST is a 1.6 meter aperture, off-axis Gregorian
telescope and currently the largest aperture solar telescope in the world.
The ideal candidate should have at least 4 years of experience with operation
and maintenance of telescopes and instrumentation, including management of
observing personnel and technical staff. Experience with large aperture systems
would be preferred. At least a B.S. degree in Physics, Astronomy or related
field is required. Familiarity with general telescope and dome operations such
as observing, mirror removal and aluminizing, balancing, optical calibration
and alignment, wavefront sensing, adaptive optics, general care of complex
mechanical assemblies, computer control, and so forth are essential.
The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of operation during an
approximately year-long training period, covering all aspects of the telescope
systems and scientific instruments. At the end of this period the candidate
will assume full responsibility for telescope operations. The position would be
supervised by the NST Project Director and the Observatory Director.
