PHaST and the Transit of Venus

Transit Day

The day of the Venus transit, June 8, 2004, was bright and clear in Dubai. It was also hot (44 C). Here is the observing setup at the American School of Dubai.

The school was very helpful, providing the canopy, table and chairs, and electric power. Many students came by during the day to see the transit using the eclipse viewers I brought and a pair of binoculars with white-light solar filters.

Here is an image from the transit observations.

This image was acquired at 6:08:56 UT. Click on the image to see a movie of the Venus transit from Dubai. Note that non-uniformities in the data have so far prevented me from correcting the shift of the Sun in the movie frames.

For comparison, here is a fine movie of H-alpha Venus transit images from Kanzelhöhe Solar Observatory in Austria. This movie is the result of our cooperative Global H-alpha Network with special thanks to Wolfgang Otruba and his staff.
