Dear Colleagues, Wind-NRT swe and mfi parameters indicate approx at 11UT on Nov 13, 2003 the passage of a pressure pulse or a fast forward interplanetary shock, while possibly located in the Earth's sheath between its far dusk side flank and the remote night side Earth's magnetotail (X, Y, Z_GSE = -200, -38, -10 Earth radii). [A more accurate identification of remote tail region could benefit from the statistical study by Christon et al., Journal of Geophysical Research, vol 103, pp 23,521-42, 1998).] This shock overtakes a fast speed stream emanating possibly from equatorward extension of a polar magnetic coronal hole. The magnetic field fluctuates strongly while mostly in the southward orientation. The plasma proton speed at shock passage is about 750 km/s and its direction antisunward. ACE-NRT swepam and mag parameters show possible shock passage at 1010UT, in its location near 220 Earth radii upstream of Earth, and similar solar wind conditions to the ones observed in magnetic field and plasma at Wind. The NOAA Environmental space weather center in its NRT visualization indices shows disturbed magnetospheric conditions for the last three days of high speed solar wind with an interplanetary magnetic field strongly fluctuating while mostly southward oriented.
